Welcome to Rooted Respite

Supporting your emotional and spiritual well-being while you fight systemic oppression.

What is Rooted Respite?

We're a new community of activists, DEI professionals, and others committed to fighting systemic oppression overcoming burnout together. We share our stories and build resilience through community events, multi-week courses, and small-group conversations.

Healing Burnout - Focused on Justice

Burnout is part of the ongoing trauma we all sustain under capitalism. Under capitalism, money is the main concern, leaving people and our planet's resources vulnerable to extraction and exploitation.

This system uses up labor and resources until they are totally spent without giving much of anything back. We know this system is flawed, and the people fighting this system on the ground are tired.

You might be burnt out if:

  • You experience intense feelings of dread and depression that you can't shake.
  • You feel anxious about going to work or participating in activism you once found meaningful.
  • You've thought about abandoning your cause(s) altogether to do something completely unrelated to social justice.
  • The smallest obstacles send you into a spiral of anxiety and stress.
  • You feel like you're always overwhelmed no matter how many "hacks" and systems you implement to manage your time and tasks.

Taking a day off or a vacation is not enough to heal. Healing burnout requires a change in how you think about yourself in relation to work. It also requires community.

What we believe.

Four fundamental principles underlie everything Rooted Respite does:

  • All beings have intrinsic worth: All life has worth because it exists. This worth is not tied to output, market value, or any other measure imposed by capitalism. We exist to exist.
  • Interdependence before individualism: Humans are social beings in relationship with the earth and other animal species. We depend on others for the lives we live; no one does anything completely on their own.
  • The small scale repeats at the large scale and vice versa: Grace Lee Boggs said, "In order to transform the world, [people] must transform themselves." Changing our outlook and worldview has dramatic effects on the world in which we live.
  • Spiritual healing facilitates the healing of trauma: Where trauma fragments and separates us from our true selves, spiritual healing reunites and aligns us with the foundational Source of life. Contemplative practices help us find an entry way back to Source and further the task of reconnecting our disparate selves.

Who You Are

If you are experiencing burnout as an activist, DEI professional, faith-based changemaker, or a person otherwise committed to social justice, Rooted Respite is for you if:

  • You want to be part of a community of peers invested in your emotional and spiritual well-being.
  • You've been searching for spiritual community rooted in anti-capitalist and decolonial values but nothing quite fits.
  • You feel like you can't be as open about your political views as you'd like in your workshops and seminars out of a fear that participants will take your views as a personal attack.
  • You have been called "too sensitive", "angry", "difficult", or any other version of these at work because you call out racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, and any other -isms as they happen.
  • You're ready to engage in self-reflection that will transform you and your worldview.

Rooted Respite is NOT for you if:

  • You're not committed to dismantling the systems upholding white supremacy, capitalism, and patriarchy as the rule of the land.
  • You're interested in only helping yourself and not concerned with community or collective healing.
  • You're in the midst of a mental health emergency that needs professional care.
  • You're not ready to plumb the depths of who you are and who you want to be.
